About Haarlem International College
Haarlem International College (HIC) is the only full British-curriculum international school in the Haarlem region, serving a growing community of expatriate and internationally minded Dutch families from Nursery through to Sixth Form. Located in the heart of Haarlem's elegant Koninginnelaan neighbourhood, HIC offers families in the wider Haarlem, Heemstede, and Bloemendaal area a high-quality alternative to commuting to Amsterdam's city-centre schools, with strong academic outcomes and a warm, tight-knit community ethos.
HIC follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales throughout the primary and secondary phases, offering Cambridge IGCSE examinations at Year 10 and 11, and a full suite of A-Level courses at the Sixth Form. The school has a particularly strong tradition in the humanities and the arts, with outstanding results in English Literature, History, Geography, and Visual Arts. In recent years, HIC has also significantly expanded its STEM provision, investing in new science laboratories and a coding and robotics curriculum strand from Year 3 upwards.
One of HIC's most valued attributes is its manageable scale. With just over 600 students across all year groups, the school is large enough to offer a comprehensive curriculum and wide extracurricular programme, yet small enough for every student to be known by name and supported as an individual. The pastoral system is structured around vertical tutor groups, which mix students of different ages and foster mentorship, belonging, and a strong sense of school identity.
HIC operates an extensive school bus service with routes connecting Haarlem, Amsterdam South, Amstelveen, Hoofddorp, and Schiphol-area residential communities, making it a genuinely practical option for families based across a wide geographic catchment. The school's proximity to Haarlem's city centre means that students benefit from easy access to the city's museums, theatres, and cultural venues as part of enrichment programming. Families considering relocation to the Haarlem area are strongly encouraged to arrange a school visit, as HIC's warm community atmosphere is best experienced in person.
