About Amsterdam International Academy
Amsterdam International Academy (AIA) is one of the most established and respected international schools in the Dutch capital, serving a diverse community of over 1,200 students from more than 70 nationalities. Located in the prestigious Amsterdam South district, just minutes from the Vondelpark and the Zuidas business corridor, AIA offers the full International Baccalaureate continuum — from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 3 to 12, through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for ages 11 to 16, and culminating in the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) for students aged 16 to 18.
The school's educational philosophy centres on developing internationally minded, reflective learners who are equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Classroom instruction at AIA is inquiry-based and collaborative, with teachers drawing on the latest research in educational psychology and cognitive science to design learning experiences that challenge and inspire students across all ability levels. The school maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, ensuring that every child receives meaningful individual attention and support.
AIA's campus is one of the best-resourced international school facilities in the Netherlands. The school boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool, fully equipped science laboratories, a state-of-the-art performing arts theatre, a design technology workshop, and dedicated sports fields for football and athletics. The school's IB resource library is among the largest of any international school in the country, and the early childhood wing has been purpose-designed to support play-based and sensory learning for the youngest students.
The school's wellbeing programme is a particular point of pride, with a dedicated team of counsellors, learning support specialists, and mental health professionals on campus throughout the year. AIA also operates an extensive school bus network covering Amsterdam South, Amstelveen, and several surrounding municipalities, making the school accessible to families based across the broader metropolitan area. Admissions are competitive, and prospective families are encouraged to apply at least 12 months in advance of their intended start date.
