About Kuala Lumpur American School
Kuala Lumpur American School is a leading American-curriculum international school located on an expansive campus in Damansara Heights, serving approximately 800 students from over 50 nationalities. The school offers a comprehensive American educational programme from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, culminating in a US High School Diploma with Advanced Placement (AP) options, making it the school of choice for North American families in Kuala Lumpur as well as for internationally minded families seeking a rigorous and holistic American-style education.
The academic programme is aligned with US Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, adapted and enriched for an international context. The elementary school (PK–Grade 5) emphasises literacy, numeracy, inquiry-based science, and social studies through integrated thematic units. The middle school (Grades 6–8) introduces departmentalised instruction and increased student autonomy, with advisory programmes supporting the social-emotional needs of early adolescents. The high school (Grades 9–12) offers over twenty AP courses across all major disciplines, including AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science A, AP Art History, AP Environmental Science, and AP World History. Students may pursue AP Capstone for an additional research-focused credential.
The campus is one of the largest international school sites in central Kuala Lumpur, occupying a mature, tree-shaded compound with extensive indoor and outdoor facilities. Highlights include a regulation-size basketball gymnasium, a 25-metre competition pool, a 400-metre athletics track, two football pitches, six tennis courts, a black-box theatre, a 600-seat auditorium, eight science laboratories, a fabrication lab (fab lab) with CNC equipment and 3D printers, dedicated art, photography, and ceramics studios, a band room and orchestra hall, and a two-storey library and media centre.
Kuala Lumpur American School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS). The school's AP programme consistently produces scores above global averages, with over 80 percent of AP examinations earning scores of 3 or higher. University placement is a particular strength — the school's college counselling team of three counsellors maintains close relationships with admissions offices at US universities and guides students through the Common Application, UC system, and international application processes. Recent graduating classes have secured acceptances to Stanford, MIT, UCLA, University of Michigan, Georgetown, NYU, University of British Columbia, University of Melbourne, NUS, and numerous other globally ranked institutions.
Extracurricular life is central to the school's identity, reflecting the American emphasis on well-rounded development. The athletics programme fields competitive teams in basketball, swimming, volleyball, football, tennis, track and field, and cross-country, competing in IASAS and SEASAC conferences. Performing arts, journalism, yearbook, NHS (National Honor Society), and community service are all deeply embedded in school culture. Annual tuition fees range from MYR 50,000 to MYR 105,000 depending on grade level.
